I lead Open Lab, Newcastle University’s centre for cross-disciplinary research in digital technologies. I am the principal investigator for the EPRSC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Civics and the EPSRC Digital Economy Research Centre. I am an expert in the application of social and ubiquitous technologies in education, health and wellbeing, as well as the development of new approaches for interaction and human-centred design methods. I am committed to the pursuit of processes by which people can be involved in creation of technology and digital services, both in the design processes and their actual production.
Most recently I have been exploring the concept of the “commissioning platform” including citizen-commissioned information services (e.g. App Movement), events (Event Movement) and media (Bootlegger). For me digital civics is about truly empowering communities and how digital technologies can underpin a new era of participatory citizenship.
