I’m a designer by background, and my research interests tend to focus around issues to do with independence and agency in later life, informal and relational care for people of all ages, and notions of “friendly” and “caring” communities. I’m intrigued by the ways in which digital technologies might support new interactions and engagements between people in relation to these issues, rather than be used as a way to replace human contact as is often the case.

I also have strong interest in involving those who live with and alongside the technologies we create throughout the design process, and increasingly in defining research questions and issues to be tackled completely from the ‘bottom up’.

I am currently working on a range of projects involving the design of technologies with communities, including issues such as social isolation among carers, intergenerational conversation around dementia, advice and information sharing in health support groups, advocacy and the measuring of outcomes in charities, and community decision making around care services.
