Sebastian Prost

I have a background in human-computer interaction (MSc from Vienna University of Technology, Austria) and in sociology (BSc from University of Vienna, Austria). In my Digital Civics MRes and PhD, my research explores questions of food democracy, alternative food networks, food justice and social innovation. In particular, I am interested in sustainable and ethical food systems that are just and accessible for all, but in particular for socio-economically deprived communities. Within this, I’m interested in the role of participatory design and digital technology to support processes of food system innovation.

In my PhD I collaborate with a local community centre in the North East of England to explore how a local food hub can address questions of health, environment, justice, and democratic participation. I follow an action research approach that builds on trusted and long-term relationships with my community partners and a process of mutual learning that aims at real and long-lasting community benefit. So far, we have set up a food hub called Tyne Fresh that provides locally sourced food to the community.
